Enjoy the Pleasure Trap—Without Getting Caught

Going over the rail and messing up our diet will not make or break us. We just have to make a U-turn and get back on track.

How to enjoy the foods you love while protecting your health.

A trap that is magically created with a spider net

How to enjoy the foods you love while protecting your health.

One of my favorite sayings is this:

Healthy aging shouldn't feel like punishment.

Like many Norwegians, I grew up loving fresh bread, potatoes, and yes—chocolate. I still do.

The goal isn't to eliminate every pleasure from life. It's to enjoy those pleasures wisely so they don't quietly rob us of our health.

As we grow older, keeping our blood sugar in a healthy range becomes one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. High blood sugar doesn't simply increase the risk of diabetes. Over time, it can damage the delicate lining of our blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, vision problems, and memory decline.

That's why I pay as much attention to my A1C as some people pay to their investment portfolio. Healthy numbers are an investment in our future self.

The American Heart Association (AHA) 2026 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics report that in 2021, there were 7.22 million global deaths from dietary risks, an increase of 18.78% since 2010. We don't want that, and we can engage in a few habits that can save us from cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death in the world.

Here are a few habits that can serve you well:

  • Know your numbers. Ask your healthcare provider to include an A1C test with your routine blood work.

  • Eat mostly whole foods—vegetables, fruit, lean protein, healthy fats, whole grains, and real bread.

  • Take a short walk after meals whenever possible. Even ten to fifteen minutes helps.

  • Finish eating earlier in the evening so that digestion is done and the liver can do its housekeeping job overnight.

  • And most importantly...don't strive for perfection. Strive for consistency.

Do I always follow my own advice?

Not even close.

"We don't have to do all the right things all the time;

we just have to do some right things most of the time. "

Sometimes I go over the edge. But because I know how not to get caught in the pleasure trap, I get back on track the next day. This way helps me to enjoy the pleasures of eating my favorite foods without paying all the consequences.

That is what Aging by Design looks like.

It isn't about deprivation.

It's about creating a lifestyle that allows you to enjoy today's pleasures without sacrificing tomorrow's health.

Northbound Minute

Getting lost in the pleasure trap is easy. Every meal is a new beginning. One unhealthy choice won't change your life—but thousands of them will.

Until next week; Live, Love, Learn, and Light up the day for somebody else.

Thank you ❤️
